Headers and high-flow converters are two of the most common performance parts people buy, and two of the most common to end up sitting in a garage for months because the install turned out to be harder than the ad implied.
Here’s what’s worth knowing before the box arrives.
What each part actually does
Headers replace the cast exhaust manifold with individual tubes for each cylinder. The goal is to stop exhaust pulses from interfering with each other so each cylinder breathes more easily. Real gains exist, but they’re usually modest on an otherwise stock engine and they land higher in the rev range than most people drive.
High-flow catalytic converters use a less restrictive substrate than the factory part. They still convert emissions — that’s the point — but they get out of the way of flow more than a stock cat does.
Neither part transforms a stock car. Both make a genuine difference on an engine that’s already been opened up elsewhere, and both change how the car sounds.
Shorty versus long-tube
Shorty headers fit roughly where the manifold did. Easier install, fewer clearance problems, usually keeps the factory cat location.
Long-tube headers run the primaries much further before collecting. More potential gain, considerably more work — they often need a custom mid-pipe, they can foul steering shafts and starters, and they frequently move the cat far enough back to matter both for emissions equipment and for ground clearance.
If someone quotes you the same labour for both, ask why.
Fitment is the actual job
This is the part the product page never mentions. “Direct fit” is a marketing claim, not a guarantee. In practice:
- Flange bolt patterns don’t always line up with what’s on the car
- Pipe diameters between the new part and the existing system rarely match
- Clearance to the floor, the steering shaft, and the frame varies with what else has been changed on the car
- Oxygen sensor bungs are often in the wrong place or missing entirely
Fixing those things means cutting, fabricating an adapter or a mid-pipe, and welding — which is exactly why we’d rather you bring us the car and the parts than try to talk it through over the phone.
The legal side, honestly
This part matters and it’s worth settling before you spend money.
Under federal law, it is illegal to remove or disable emissions control equipment on a vehicle driven on public roads. That includes running a “test pipe” in place of a catalytic converter. A high-flow cat is a legal path precisely because it is still a converter; a delete pipe is not.
Beyond that, requirements vary by state, by county, and by the vehicle’s model year — including whether a vehicle needs an emissions inspection at all. Rules also change. We’re not going to guess at what applies to your specific car in this article.
